ADRIATHON is a hackathon organised by the Faculty of Mining, Geology and Petroleum Engineering (UNIZG-RGNF), on behalf of the EIT Raw Materials Regional Center ADRIA Hub, in cooperation with:
ADRIATHON is designed as a competition in a digital environment, with an objective to develop innovative and efficient solutions for the activation of the Waste Exchange Market run by the Croatian Chamber of Economy, thus supporting the strategic objectives of Croatia set in the national Waste Management Plan (2017 – 2022), but also the EIT Raw Materials Strategy (2021- 2027).
The objectives of the Waste Exchange Market operation are as follows:
EIT RawMaterials Regional Center ADRIA is dedicated to the implementation of the EIT RawMaterials strategy, therefore aiming to increase the sustainability of exploitation and consumption of raw materials, focusing also on the development of the secondary market of raw materials.
According to the data available in the Waste Management Plan of the Republic of Croatia for the period 2017-2022, one of the largest waste producers in the Republic of Croatia is the construction sector. Although the share of waste generated in the construction sector is estimated at 17%, it is noted that the data on recorded quantities for construction waste are of unsatisfactory quality. Namely, as stated in the Report on Construction Waste Management in 2019 (MINGOR), the quantities of construction waste reported by the waste producers make only about 30% of the actual amount generated.
The largest share in construction waste is soil, stone and dredging waste (45.5%) and mixed construction and demolition waste (19.1%). They are followed by concrete, bricks, tiles and ceramics (16.1%), metals and their alloys (13.0%) and other types of waste represented by less than 7%.
Mineral non-hazardous construction waste (not including excavations) has great potential for reuse and recycling, and accounts for 40.3% of total construction waste generated in 2019.
At the same time, according to the Waste Framework Directive (2008/98 / EU), the target recovery rate for construction waste by 2020 should have been 70% of the mass of this type of waste. According to the calculation method determined by Commission Decision 2011/753 / EU (which covers only the selected types of construction waste), the recovery rate of construction waste in the Republic of Croatia for 2019 is 67%. The data on the recovery rate cannot be considered completely reliable, since part of the construction waste is not recorded in the system.
The general goal of organising ADRIATHON is to prolong the life cycle of the mineral raw materials by increasing the recovery rate of construction waste in the Republic of Croatia, with the following specific goals:
As the goals of ADRIATHON are fully aligned with those of the establishment and operation of the Croatian Chamber of Commerce's Waste Exchange, the development, visibility, and activation of the Waste Exchange are in the focus of the EIT ADRIA Regional Center and this hackathon.
The access link with technical instructions will be timely delivered to the registered participants. The official language of the ADRIATHON is English.
Shortly before the competition, there will be three introductory webinars for the registered participants, on September 1st, September 8th and September 14th, 2021.
Participants are expected to offer solutions focused on the goals of ADRIATHON, and specifically on one or more of the following:
The two-day event should result in a developed Proof of Concept (PoC) for each team, or each idea, which will then be presented to the Evaluation and Selection Committee of ADRIATHON. A detailed set of instructions for the participants can be found here.
In addition to the personal and professional benefits, gaining new knowledge and establishing business contacts, ADRIATHON participants can expect:
The criteria for the evaluation and selection of ideas can be found in the Instructions for the participants of Adriathon.
The application is submitted by August 20th via an online form on the ADRIATHON website. Individuals or teams can apply. Registered individuals will be organized into teams by the organizers, of which they will be notified in advance. A detailed set of instructions for the participants can be found here.
ADRIATHON is organized as a multi-day event consisting of:
NOTE: Registered participants are expected to participate in all webinars. The recordings of the individual parts, as well as presentations, will be available on the ADRIATHON website immediately after the webinar is held.
NOTE: Registered participants are expected to participate in all webinars. The recordings of the individual parts, as well as presentations, will be delivered to the registered hackathon participants after the webinar is held.
NOTE: Only the attendees of this webinar will be able to participate in the competition.
The targeted number of the ADRIATHON participants is 28, organized in interdisciplinary times of four people. Given the nature of the challenges posed, the aim is to include experts, researchers and students from the technical and social sciences, who will initially apply as a team or as individuals.
The targeted structure of the ADRIATHON participants is:
Participants should ensure their availability in September, during the duration of ADRIATHON competition, as well as on the dates of preparatory webinars.
